A Poet's Prayer - Part 3

 Chapter Four

"This way, please, Mrs. Stainton."

She followed, her heart flooded with joy at the prospect of what her discovery had meant, but equally flooded with concern and fear. How serious was Robert's accident? Was he going to be okay?

When she approached him, she quietly rejoiced to see he was awake. Should she tell him? Was now the right time?

He smiled weakly, when he saw her.

"Robert! What happened? Alfie came and said you had an accident, are you okay, my love?"

Robert chuckled a little and stared at his foot, which was in a plaster. He seemed otherwise unharmed.

"I am okay, dear Rose. I'm okay."

They kissed. The nurse, who had turned away to give them privacy, now explained that the accident had appeared more serious at first. He had dislocated his shoulder and had initially been in immense pain, but the most severe injury was his ankle that had been broken. No internal injuries, however, and he was already clearly on the mend.

"Thank you," Rose said in earnest.

"I'll leave you two to chat," the nurse replied and did just that.

"Oh, Robert, how did it happen? Alfie said it was on your way home."

"There was a little girl - about Minnie's age - crossing the road with some sweets. She was oblivious to the traffic, I thought she must have been deaf, she couldn't hear the approaching carriages. So I stepped in to rescue a fellow pedestrian. And have a couple of bruises to show for it."

"Robert, you hero! The girl's parents must be so grateful."

"She came from the orphanage. They said she was indeed deaf and were indebted to me not only for rescuing her but finding her, as they had lost her on their trip to the sweet shop with the other children."

Rose wrapped her arms around her beloved husband. "Thank God you are okay. Your foot will heal?"

"I'll be back on my feet in a matter of months. But Rose..."

"Yes, Robert?"

"Please don't touch that shoulder."

Rose was mute with alarm. But then Robert chuckled.

"Don't apologise. My shoulder's perfectly fine again. I was just teasing." He winked and Rose laughed, sweeping her moist cheeks with a sleeve. "Where are the children? Do they know?"

"I asked Alfie to call on them and give Mrs. Deacon the news."

"We have two very precious children, Rose."

"Yes, Robert. We have three."
